Ice cream drop that melts the heart
Rochester, N.Y. (WROC) — On a hot Friday earlier this month, a large truck was rolling through Rochester, warming hearts and filling bellies.
Jody Belknap scampered out of her home as it approached.
“I love you guys so much!” she exclaimed.
On this day, Belknap is getting a delivery from Foodlink’s summer meals vehicle. From the truck, she gets balanced lunches, then gives them to neighbors in need
Foodlink began this service throughout the Rochester area during the pandemic.
“We did it ice cream truck style, where we literally threw a bunch of healthy meals in a truck or a van, drove around neighborhoods handing out meals to the community,” said Mark Dwyer, Foodlink’s Director of Marketing and Communications.
The only thing missing was the ice cream, and that’s where Paul Nasrani came in.
While working in finance in New York City, he started making ice cream for his coworkers before eventually leaving his job to start Adirondack Creamery – a journey featured on CBS Mornings.
With a personal connection to the City of Rochester and his product sold in Wegmans and Tops, Paul wanted to give back to the community.
“My grandmother was a single mother in her 50s here,” Nasrani said.
For the past four years, he’s traveled in from downstate once a year to join the summer meals Foodlink vehicle to hand out a message and a sweet treat.
“This is really to bring awareness to Foodlink and what they’re doing,” Nasrani, with his son Tayel standing next to him, said. “To share a great ice cream that may not be able to have it on a regular basis, but also they’re going to get a healthy meal and they should be aware of this program.”
