Down From the Mountains, New York Ice Cream

Ice cream après ski? When it’s a snowy scoop of WhiteFace Mint Chip, tasting of peppermint and studded with chocolate slivers, why not?

This flavor, named for one of New York’s highest mountains, is among eight made by Adirondack Creamery, and was first sold in that region. The ice cream, now made in Kingston, N.Y., near the Catskills, is made from local milk and cream, without gums and other thickeners. The coffee bean and vanilla flavors are quite intense; the kulfi-pistachio cardamom offers a touch of the exotic, and, like the mint, has no green coloring. The Barkeater, a translation of the Mohawk word Adirondack, is studded with toffee.

The ice creams are $5.49 to $6.49 a pint at Butterfield Market, Garden of Eden, Frank’s Gourmet in Washington Heights and Foragers Market in Dumbo, Brooklyn. At Fairway, they are $4.99 a pint.
